In this community-driven initiative, students embarked on a transformative journey to enhance a local park situated in Opa Locka, Florida. The existing park, a basic field with limited activities, became the canvas for a creative and collaborative effort to create a more vibrant and engaging space for residents.
Needs Assessment: Students began by conducting a thorough needs assessment, engaging with the community to understand their desires and preferences for the park.
This Park Revitalization Initiative not only transformed a basic field into a dynamic community hub but also exemplified the power of collaborative efforts in creating spaces that resonate with the people they serve.
A Fresh Food Market was chosen as the plus program due to the lack of grocery stores in the Opa-Locka area. With limited access to Fresh Food, this was the perfect opportunity to introduce it to the community. A Commercial and Demo kitchen were incorporated to demonstrate how to prepare certain foods sold in the market and give those who are less fortune the appliances and tools to cook.
The first floor serves as a multipurpose space for residents to utilize. It features many activities for both children and adults.
The pool was a component of the original building and was not allowed to be altered for this project.
The second floor features the library portion of the building.
The third floor introduces a rooftop like area that wraps around the perimeter of the east and west components of the building.
